Vehicle Inspection in Turkey: Intervals, Late Fees and Preparation

Private cars are inspected at the end of their third year and every two years after that; commercial vehicles such as taxis, trucks and buses at the end of their first year and every year after that. If you miss the deadline, the inspection fee goes up by 5 percent for each month of delay.

When the inspection is due

The inspection interval depends on the type of vehicle. TÜVTÜRK, the company that runs the inspection stations in Turkey, publishes the intervals as follows:

Vehicle groupFirst inspectionFollowing inspections
Private and official carsAt the end of the third yearEvery two years
Motorcycles and mopedsAt the end of the third yearEvery two years
Wheeled tractorsAt the end of the third yearEvery three years
Commercial vehicles such as taxis, trucks and buses, and other motor vehiclesAt the end of the first yearEvery year
Trailers and semi-trailersAt the end of the first yearEvery year

You can look up how long your vehicle's inspection is valid by entering your plate number on the inspection lookup page on TÜVTÜRK's website.

If you have the inspection done before the deadline, the next period is counted from the day of the inspection. For example, if your inspection is valid until 28 February and you go on 18 January, your next inspection date is calculated from 18 January.

If you miss the deadline

Under Article 35 of the Highway Traffic Law, the inspection fee is charged with a 5 percent surcharge for each month past the deadline, and part of a month counts as a full month. A vehicle that is three months late pays the inspection fee plus 15 percent.

Under Article 34 of the same law, the owner of a vehicle driven without a valid inspection is given an administrative fine and a period in which to have the inspection done. If the vehicle is on the road without inspection after that period as well, a new fine is issued and the vehicle is barred from traffic.

You can see the late fee you will pay on TÜVTÜRK's late fee calculator.

Before you go

  • Book an appointment. Appointments are free and are made on TÜVTÜRK's website or through e-Devlet, the Turkish government's online services portal.
  • Check for outstanding debts. If the vehicle has unpaid tax, traffic fines or toll violation fines, the inspection is not started.
  • Make sure your exhaust emission test is valid. A vehicle without a valid test is recorded as having a serious defect at inspection. The test can also be done at the inspection stations without an appointment.
  • Bring your documents. You need the registration certificate, valid traffic insurance and your ID; a vehicle without traffic insurance is not accepted for inspection. If the vehicle is not yours, check the power of attorney requirements.

If the vehicle fails

A vehicle with a serious defect is not approved and is given one month to have the defects fixed. The re-inspection within that month is free of charge and can be done at any station that serves the same vehicle group. If the month passes, the full inspection fee is paid again.

What changes in 2027

The inspection stations are run by TÜVTÜRK today. According to the announcement of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, a new twenty-year concession period begins on 15 August 2027 and the service will be provided by a new operator. Because the inspection intervals and the late fee rule come from the law, they stay the same even when the operator changes; if the appointment address changes, this page will be updated.
