When MTV is paid
Under Article 9 of the Motor Vehicle Tax Law, the tax is assessed for the whole year at the beginning of January and is paid in two equal installments:
| Installment | When to pay |
|---|---|
| First installment | During January |
| Second installment | During July |
No separate tax notice is sent; in other words, you have to pay without waiting for one to arrive. If you prefer, you can pay both installments together in January.
The amount depends on the type, age and engine characteristics of the vehicle and is set again every year. You can look up the current amount by plate number on the website of the Revenue Administration (Gelir İdaresi Başkanlığı).
If you buy a vehicle during the year
For a vehicle registered for the first time during the year, the tax is assessed for the whole year; the part whose installment period has already passed is paid within one month of the registration date. If the vehicle is registered after the first six months of the year, only the tax for the second six-month period is paid.
Be careful when buying a used vehicle: before the sale and transfer, any taxes, late payment surcharges and penalties outstanding up to that day must be paid.
If it is not paid
- A late payment surcharge accrues. An installment not paid on time is charged a late payment surcharge until the day it is paid.
- The vehicle is not accepted for inspection. If the check at the inspection station shows tax debt, the inspection is not started.
- The vehicle cannot be sold or transferred. Before the sale and transfer, the notary is required to ask for the document showing that the tax debt has been paid.
Where to pay
You can pay the tax through the Revenue Administration's Digital Tax Office (Dijital Vergi Dairesi), at banks authorized to collect taxes, or at tax offices.
